Formentera is famous for its pristine white beaches and turquoise crystal clear water: an overwhelming sight.<\/span><\/p>\n

The island of Formentera\u2019s name is said to come from the Latin <\/b>word\u00a0frumentarium<\/b> which means “granary”. There are seven windmills that are a testimony that grinding wheat was an important business for the islanders of Formentera. The seven windmills are found at: the Mol\u00ed Vell and the Mol\u00ed d\u2019en Botigues, located in La Mola; the Mol\u00ed d\u2019en Teuet and the Mol\u00ed de ses Roques, near Sant Ferran; the Mol\u00ed d\u2019en Mateu and the Mol\u00ed d\u2019en Jeroni, to the west of the Sant Francesc church, and the now defunct Mol\u00ed d\u2019en Simon, in Es Cap de Barbaria.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The island was occupied in prehistoric times<\/b>, going back to 2,000\u20131,600 BC. Archaeological sites of that period remain in Ca na Costa, de Barbaria (multiple sites)\u00a0and Cova des Fum. The island had been occupied by the\u00a0Carthaginians<\/a>\u00a0and then by the Romans. In the following centuries, the\u00a0Visigoths<\/a>, the\u00a0Byzantines<\/a>, the\u00a0Vandals<\/a>, and the\u00a0Arabs<\/a> spent time there. In 1109 it was the target of a devastating attack by the\u00a0Norwegian<\/a>\u00a0king\u00a0Sigurd I<\/a>\u00a0the head of the “Norwegian Crusade<\/a>“. The island was conquered by the\u00a0Catalans<\/a> and added to the\u00a0Crown of Aragon<\/a>\u00a0and later became part of the medieval\u00a0Kingdom of Majorca<\/a>. From 1403 to the early 18th century, the threat of\u00a0Barbaric pirate<\/a>\u00a0attacks made everyone flee the island. <\/span><\/p>\n

Another thing that makes Formentera famous is the artists who arise or lived on the island.<\/b> The Canadian writer\u00a0Patrick Roscoe<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was born in Formentera.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Joni Mitchell<\/span>\u00a0wrote her 1971 album\u00a0Blue<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0on the island<\/i> while\u00a0Bob Dylan<\/span><\/a>\u00a0once lived in the Cap de Barbaria lighthouse. Author\u00a0Matt Haig<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/b>wrote in\u00a0Reasons to Stay Alive<\/i><\/span><\/a><\/span> about visiting the island often in his twenties.\u00a0The opening track of the\u00a0album\u00a0Islands<\/i><\/span><\/a>, “Formentera Lady\u201d,<\/i> by King Crimson<\/span><\/a> is named after the island. <\/span><\/p>\n

Music resonates all over the island. Pink Floyd’s connection with Formentera began in 1967 when the band members,\u00a0Roger Walters\u00a0and\u00a0Syd Barrett\u00a0visited the island to stay with Dr. Samuel Hutt, aka\u00a0Hank Wangford, an English country and western songwriter who was renown as London’s long-haired rock-and-roll doctor in the sixties due to his work with drug addiction which, of course, brought him into contact with many artists.<\/span><\/p>\n

Formentera has the world-renown guitar and bass workshop,\u00a0Formentera Guitars<\/i>, located in the\u00a0town of\u00a0Sant Ferran De Ses Roques<\/a>. Handcrafting instruments for decades, Formentera Guitars is one of the most prestigious guitar-building schools in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the main villages of the Island<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sant Francesc Xavier<\/b> is the capital of Formentera and the main town on the island. Sant Francesc is the headquarters of the Consell Insular (town hall) and the main services on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sant Francesc Xavier is today the center of the fashion market and on its main streets are small boutiques with a selection of items as clothing, decoration, and jewelry. From May to October, small craft stalls are set up on the streets, some of jewelry or leather stalls. Many offer handmade crafts of Formentera. On Tuesdays and Saturdays (mornings) in the Jard\u00ed de Ses Eres (behind the church) there is a flea market with clothes, books, and second-hand items.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sant Ferran de Ses Roques<\/b> is an inland town located in the center of the island, where the roads that come from Sant Francesc, Es Pujols and Pilar de la Mola cross. The town of Sant Ferran de Ses Roques is where hippies and bohemians gathered at the legendary Fonda Pepe<\/b> th<\/span>at is still open. Here you will enjoy the free, creative, and festive character still alive along the artisan and art markets in the summer months, every night except for Wednesdays and Sundays.<\/span><\/p>\n

El Pilar de la Mola<\/b> is in the eastern part of the island, on a higher plateau. This plateau is surrounded by imposing 90\u00ba cliffs that fall to the sea. Close to the town of El Pilar de La Mola is the highest point in Formentera with 192 meters.<\/span>
\n<\/span>El Pilar de la Mola has a different landscape because it receives more rain here. This is where farmers produce the island’s wine. Long stone walls along the road protect the crops from the strong winds that fortunately subside in summer. At the end of this road is the beautiful La Mola lighthouse that has been filmed several times. This building is located right on the edge of a cliff almost 200 meters above the sea level.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you take the ferry boat from Ibiza you\u2019ll arrive to La Savina<\/b>. This is the commercial port, an exclusive marina. You will find here the cr\u00e8me de la cr\u00e8me of the nautical people. Many ferry services arrive from Ibiza and the mainland of Spain, as well big yachts and beautiful boats from all around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Walking around the harbour, there are\u00a0bars, cafes, and restaurants\u00a0and, in the summertime, a\u00a0long line of market stalls selling\u00a0clothing, jewelry, souvenirs and hand-crafted goods. You can see Ibiza and the islet of Es Vedr\u00e0 too. There are also many\u00a0bike, scooter and car rental places.
\nLa Savina is a great place to settle down and you can easily access from here any part of the island. Playa Illetes and Playa de Levante are close by. La Savina has an exclusive ambiance.<\/span><\/p>\n

And as for Nightlife in Formentera\u2026<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

There is no better way to start your evening than having a drink at one of the many beach\u00a0Chiringuitos.\u00a0 <\/span>The wooden kiosk that is called\u00a0Piratabus<\/b>\u00a0at Es Arenals beach is a lively location and is famous for its excellent mojitos. Beso Beach<\/b>, close to Playa Illetes, is a great place to head for sunsets with cocktails and dancing.\u00a0Blue Bar<\/b>\u00a0on Playa Migjorn is perfect for staying up late at night – you will hear some top-quality music here.<\/span><\/p>\n
